Work Permits
Some students choose to work during the school year. We have had students work as umpires, concession stand workers, swim instructor aides as well as models and actors. Regardless of your employment, the Illinois Department of Labor has Child Labor Laws in place for minors who wish to work. A Certificate of Employment (work permit) is required.
"How do I get a work permit?" Some people believe that you need to obtain a work permit before you can get a job. It is actually the other way around. The Illinois Department of Labor issues work permits for specific jobs that meet certain safety requirements.
Who hires 7th and 8th grade students? Most of the work permits that have been issued over the last few years have been for Downers Grove Youth Baseball (DGYB) Umpire Program and for Soccer Referees through Roadrunners (Midwest Referee/U.S. Soccer Federation). Please click on those links for more information. We have also issued some work permits for a few area swimming pools (concession workers or swim lesson assistants). Suggestion for finding a job - start with businesses/restaurants close to your home so you can just walk to work if they hire you. Go in to each place, introduce yourself, and tell them that you are looking for a job. They may only hire 15 or 16 year olds so don't get discouraged! Keep looking. You could also make some money doing things that do not require work permits. For suggestions - click here. No Job - No Problem.
Listed below are the requirements for students who wish to work. I have also included a link to the Illinois Department of Labor website. This will detail the kind of jobs that students are not allowed to obtain. I am able to issue a work permit as soon as I have all 6 items. A copy of the work permit will be placed in the student's cumulative file and one copy will be issued to the student. Additional copies will be sent to the Employer and The Illinois Department of Labor. Please contact Mr. Gross if you have any questions 630-719-5810.

ITEMS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO ISSUE A CERTIFICATE OF EMPLOYMENT
1. Student's Social Security Number - a copy of the card is preferred.
2. Certificate of Physical Fitness (also known as a Sports Physical) - See Form Below. This needs to have been done within the last year. If your last physical was over a year ago then you will need to get a new one. If you participated in a sport here at Herrick this year then I can just copy the sports physical that your turned in.
3. Birth Certificate. (certified copy). A copy will be made for our records and the certified copy will be returned to you.
4. Letter of Intent to Hire (from each employer). This is the big one. Your employer will need to write a letter indicating what your job will be and the hours that you will be working. Most places that hire minors use some kind of form letter.
5. Principal's Statement - Mr. Gross will take care of this. At Herrick we are fine if a student works as long as the student is not failing a class. If a student is failing a class, a work permit will not be issued until the student is passing all subjects - NO EXCEPTIONS.
6. Statement of Permission from Parent/Guardian - This can be a hand written or typed letter - See sample below.
